Some of the highest population densities of the greater prairie chicken are found in the Flint Hills of Kansas. The tallgrass prairie of the Flint Hills is often the “best” place to look for this species of grouse and it is a region of Kansas that is extremely unique. This fifty mile wide swath of land, running nearly border to border from Oklahoma to Nebraska, is the last remaining tallgrass prairie in all of North America.
I’ve casually referred to this as a “Top Secret” prairie chicken hunt because I will be hunting on Fort Riley, Kansas. The opportunity to hunt on military installations is often open to the general public given that you complete that particular installation’s hunter registration/education process.
